Legends of the Delaware Indians and Picture Writing (Iroquois and Their Neighbors)
Published in Hardcover by Syracuse Univ Pr (Trade) (December, 1997)
Authors: Richard C. Adams, Deborah Nichols, Nora Thompson, and Lucy Parks Blalock
Average review score:

A seminal contribution to Native American studies.
Legends of the Delaware Indians and Picture Writing is beautifully amplified by Deborah Nichol's introduction and brief biography of Richard C. Adams(1864-1921), a self educated Delaware (Lenape) Indian who devoted 25 years of his life to the furtherance of causes of the many trialed Delaware tribe. The Legends are part of his scholarly and historical legacy. The tales teach homilies on desirable attributes such as pride, courage, promise-keeping, modesty and courtesy as well as courting customs, gambling games, and other pastimes. The picture writing and photographs enrich and complement the text as do the appendices of Lenape translations of several of the legends by Lucy Parks Blalock and Nora Thompson Deane. Legends Of The Delaware Indians And Picture Writing is a very valuable text both because of the enriched script of the tales but also because of the complex, condensed history of the persecutions suffered by the Delawares detailed in the introduction. The cover illustration gracing Legends of the Delaware Indians is a color painting reproduction of Delaware Women by Ruth Blalock Jones.

Moon Handbooks: Maryland-Delaware: Including Washington, D.C.

Throrough and Fun!
I also own the Pennsylvania Handbook by the same author, and I'm continually amazed by her ability to search out the odd little museums and restaurants that really make a destination unique. In Maryland, you can polka the night away after visiting an out-of-the-way military code museum. And, I enjoy the sly humor that kind of sneaks up on you: "In the film Star Wars, Luke was misdirected when he was told to beware The Dockside. This friendly, casual restaurant...is a good place for inexpensive meals from breakfast ($5) through dinner ($6-9). Lots of Crisfield watermen eat here." (from the Eastern Shore section). Like all Moon Handbooks, this one makes the ordinary come alive, covers the whole area extremely well, and is fun to read.

New Castle County, Delaware Street Map Book
Published in Paperback by Adc the Map People (January, 2000)
Author: Adc
Average review score:

Lifesaver
When I moved to DE, relying on directions from natives was usually a bad idea--they'd lived here so long they all used landmarks (some of which no longer existed) to give directions. This map has yet to get me lost in 4 years of use. It lists both route names (which the natives use) and numbers (which the rest of us use.) Invaluable!

A reference work for your travel library
A really helpful tool when planning a trip. Each entry has a list that front which includes contact info, how many rooms, extras, grounds, rates and directions. Then there's a writeup that gives you some flavor about the B&B, the owners, the interior design and the cooking. There are a set of indexes in the back that are really helpful for those seeking particular features (e.g. B&Bs with swimming pools, B&Bs that accept pets, near bodies of waters or mountain B&Bs) or particular location (B&Bs in the Finger Lakes region).

Self Defence the New Alex Delaware Thril
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown Company ()
Author: Jonathan Kellerman
Average review score:

Self Defense-Another great novel by Jonathan Kellerman
Jonathan Kellerman again hits the mark with this thrilling tale of repressed memories regurgitating after a juror sits in on a murder trial. His use of logical deduction in bringing the reader to the final climax is reminiscent of Arthur Conan Doyles best works in Sherlock Holmes mysteries.

I enjoyed this book so much that every re-reading still has to be done in one sitting--the tale grips your attention.

Station Master of the Underground the Life and Letters of Thomas Garrett
Published in Hardcover by Whimsie Pr (June, 1977)
Author: James McGowan
Average review score:

Who's for Abolition? I am!
Garrett, like so many in his fambly, was one of the unsung heroes of the American experiment. Which has failed, I hate to say it but we should all pack up our things and join other countries. But before it failed men like Garrett, and so many in his fambly, showed the truest, farthest measure of human goodness. And, somehow, managed to make a buck doing it. Don't ask me how, I don't know. Perhaps their decadent addiction to the capitalist system would result in those they championed, those they freed, and those they loved, finding oppression even after emancipation. Way to go. All the same, though, they did a lot better than most people. Most of those dead people were bastards. Especially in the South.

Travel Smart: Maryland/Delaware
Published in Paperback by Avalon Travel Publishing (March, 1999)
Author: Sheila Kinkade
Average review score:

Great Guide to DC, Maryland and Delaware
Ms. Kinkade has done a great job with her overview guide of Washington D.C. (and its surroundings), Maryland and Delaware. From Alexandria to Annapolis to the Delaware mansions, she gives thorough, pithy reviews of sights, food and lodging throughout the region. The guide is very logically laid out, with useful road maps and -- a unique touch -- a paragraph on a "perfect day" in each of the regions reviewed. As an experienced weekend wanderer in the region, I can strongly endorse the book.

The White Deer: And Other Stories Told by the Lenape
Published in School & Library Binding by William Morrow (May, 1995)
Author: John Bierhorst
Average review score:

Stories 4th Graders Love
I teach 4th grade in Newark, New Jersey, and wanted to do some work on the Lenape with my kids. The stories in this book were so appealing to them that they tell them to each other and act them out when I read them. Their favorite story is the one about the White Deer, because of the gory scene where a person gets their legs bitten off by a monster, but then sticks them back on with spit. I highly recommend these stories if you can stand the imagery.
